Best homemade insulation?
For Science, we have to find the best form of insulation – other than a vacuum flask.
Using the sort of stuff you could find around the house – what would create the best insulation?
I want to be beat everyone else!
We’re wrapping whatever this is around a mug – or similar.
Any help will be much appreciated!
Wrap kitchen foil tightly around the beaker – including the base – with the most silvery side facing inwards to reflect back radiant heat.
Surround the beaker with loosely packed cotton ‘wool’, at least 5cm thickness all round (the trapped air in this ‘wool’ makes it an excellent insulator) – make a tube from paper/card to go around the beaker and hold the ‘wool’ in place.
The bottom and top must be insulated too – standing on polystyrene might be better than ‘wool’ because it won’t get air squashed out of it by the weight of water in the beaker ( polystyrene from packaging or some food trays …. corrugated cardboard would be an alternative). The top could include some silvery foil.
When filling-up the beaker with hot water don’t let any overflow or spill down the side of the beaker -this will spoil the insulation by replacing some of the trapped air with water.
