Does how something is chilled effect its taste?
Maybe I’m crazy, but I swear that wine and champagne that is chilled in an ice bucket tastes better than that which has been chilled by a refrigerator. Same temp, as proven by an instant read digital thermometer.
Can this be true, or is it some sort of placebo effect?
Oneophiles, please comment.
It probably does have an effect. It could have to do with the fact that when you put it in ice it has just reached the cool temperature, while if you drink it right out of the fridge, it’s been at that cool temperature for a while. Maybe prolonged coolness (even if sustained) can affect taste.
The natural ways tend to work better for high quality, natural foods. Of course, I’m sure you wouldn’t do this, but if something is refrigerated in the fridge and it’s open, it may get the taste of other foods.
Whether it’s placebo or not… what does it matter. You found a way to better enjoy your champagne. It’s always fun to have little rituals about the food, drinks or little things we like (as long as they are little…).
