Are cyling plastic water bottles safe to put water in for a long time?
I got a bell cycling water bottle at walmart. Is it safe to keep water in it a long time or do you have to empty it out when your not going to use the water for a long time? Will you get any cancer from having water in those bottles?
The water bottles you buy water or Gatorade in is a slightly different type of plastic than that used for sport or bike bottles. If you want to keep water or a sport drink (bottled or tap) in a sport bottle refrigerate it, keeping it at room temps or warmer will allow bacteria and other contaminates to change the taste of the drink. There have been stories about the chemicals used to make the bottles, the use of Bisphenol A is the concern, bottles using this in manufacturing will have either “PC” or the number “7″ in the recycle code. When the bottles are heated the BPA comes out and then can be ingested and high level long term exposure has caused health problems, so hand wash them and avoid heating the bottles as in putting them in a dish washer or microwave.
