I have a vintage fishing rod and the wooden rod butt/handle has chipped. Would WD-40 loosen the epoxy?
The epoxy has been cured for over 5 yrs. Also please recommend stuff that would be cheap if the WD-40 doesn’t work.
Solvent will not remove a two part heavy viscosity epoxy nor will lol@wd40.. The only way to remove the wooden handle is with a propane torch.(a must for any Rod Builder).. This is done slowly back and forth motion, heat should not go as far as to heat or melt the blank even if it’s solid glass. Careful and gentle, heat and stop, attempt to rotate handle while pushing or pulling whichever is needed, continue if there is no movement and so-on. This is the only way to soften epoxy specially if it’s a two part. Again careful not to heat blank, it depends on how much epoxy there is until it loosen,
take your time. A chipped wooden butt grip, grind a similiar wood and mix with epoxy and glue in place of chip, then sand. either epoxy over with Flex coat thin finish or shellac.
MEK, doesn’t work against resin and harder as one.
