Teapot Infuser

Debunking Tea Myths
As with any widely popular product, many myths about tea have materialized over the hundreds of years during which it has enjoyed its status as the world’s most consumed drink. A number of apocryphal stories concerning tea’s origin are popular, and still more tales of tea’s healing and nourishing properties, not to mention its role in mystical prognostication, provide a deceptive picture. While it is true that tea has antioxidant and diuretic properties, the ability of properly read leaves to foretell the future are, at best, wildly exaggerated.
Firstly, many people think that all tea comes from China, or China and India. While those countries produce by far the most tea of any, the crop also grows in Japan as well as nations in Africa and North and South America.
It is also widely believed that green, black, and white teas come from different varieties of plants. This is also false; all tea, properly speaking, all tea comes from the Camilla sinensis plant. The variety of teas commonly differentiated by color result in the different drying and processing methods used. Black teas, due to their particular roasting and curing process, undergo oxidation that results in their characteristic colors and flavors, while green and white teas are most often steamed. Herbal “teas” are not really teas at all; they are more correctly called tisanes, infusions, or tinctures, and are made from a wide assortment of spices, flowers, herbs, and so forth.
There is much confusion and misinformation about the tea’s caffeine content. A good rule of thumb is that a cup of tea has about one-half of the caffeine of a comparable cup of coffee. This will vary greatly, however, depending on the type of tea, the temperature of the water, and the duration of the steeping time. You can choose and control the caffeine content, to some extent, of your favorite tea. Another common misconception is that green and white teas have either no caffeine or very little. This is a dangerous myth, for these teas can have quite a lot of caffeine, and those looking for caffeine-free alternatives would do better to look towards the herbal drinks mentioned above.
One less common tea myth is that drinking tea can lead to iron deficiency because the tea somehow blocks the body’s ability to absorb iron. In healthy adults, this is not a concern; however, the natural diuretic properties of tea can exacerbate the problems of persons who already have such a condition. Such people should take care to only consume tea as an accompaniment to a meal.
Recently tea has garnered some attention for its rich antioxidant content. Antioxidants, it is true, help the body shed toxins and give a small boost to the immune system, but this is also true of a regular, healthy diet of fruits and vegetables. While the addition of tea to your daily regimen can provide a small addition to this effect, it should in no way substitute for good eating habits.
Some of the myths about tea briefly outlined above hold some truth, and tea can be a great part of a healthy lifestyle. Like anything, however, if consumed in extreme quantities tea can have adverse effects. Remember, though, that tea (without sugar or sweeteners) has no calories and can provide a delicious and positive supplement to both meals and everyday living.
