Advantages of Synchronous Motors
The main function of a synchronous motor is the providing of constant speed. High-horsepower capacity synchronous motors are an efficient means of converting AC energy into work and provide power-factor correction.
There are two types of synchronous motors: excited and non-excited. Excited synchronous motors require direct current supplied from a separate source such as a DC generator connected to the motor shaft. Non-excited synchronous motors use a self-starting circuit and do not have an external power supply.
Synchronous motors are better than non-synchronous motors for several reasons:
- The speed of the synchronous motor is independent of the load when adequate current is available.
- A synchronous motor holds their position when a DC current is applied to the rotor windings and stator.
- Accurate control of speed and position is attainable when using open loop controls.
- A proper field current relative to the load allows adjustment of a synchronous motor power factor.
- Synchronous motors run only at their synchronous speed.
- The construction of the synchronous motor is electrically more efficient than a non-synchronous motor.
A variable frequency drive (VFD) system includes an AC motor, a controller, and an operator interface. A three-phase induction motor is the most common type of motor of a VFD, but single-phase motors are applicable, too. Induction motors are the most economical type of motor to use in a VFD.
Predictive maintenance (PdM), also known as condition-based maintenance, is a schedule of maintenance based on the condition of equipment The condition of the equipment is determined by performing continuous or periodic condition monitoring of the equipment. PdM is a better type of maintenance than time-based maintenance which is labor intensive and often does not identify equipment problems. PdM is cost-effective because maintenance is performed at a scheduled time when maintenance is cost effective and prior to equipment loss of performance.
Vibration analysis of high-speed rotating equipment such as a synchronous motor allows the user to evaluate the condition of equipment and avoid costly failures. Used properly as a part of predictive maintenance, a vibration analysis displays the full vibration spectrum of three axes.
