What is up with this bizarre, literary spam mail I keep getting?!?
For months I’ve been getting this spam mail that has a picture in it that advertises a sale on expensive watches, but below it is always a random excerpt from what sounds like a very dark novel. I know I shouldn’t open spam, but I’m so curious about what book it’s from and why they even decide to put in the quote. Additionally, does anyone know what this passage is from: “When he let the coverlet fall into a smoking heap at the baseboard, there was a big smoking bald spot in the middle of the wall, but the paper was out. It would be nice to believe he had performed heroically, but he supposed it was only that escape thing again, because the pain had been really dreadful. He waited patiently for her to return, eating his soup as he did so, holding the spoon awkwardly between the first and second fingers of his left hand. The bulb out there wasnt terribly bright, but it was bright enough for him to see another police bolt and another two Kreig locks on that door as well.” Is it 1984?
Anything weird you see in a spam is designed to fool a spam filter. The idea is to embed the advertising in a picture which the filter won’t be able to read (some filters do actually decode text in images now, but they aren’t very widely deployed because of course it eats up processing power and can cause lost mail on a busy server) and then put in text that is either completely nonsensical or appears to be real writing. Once it makes it past the filter it’s obvious to human eyes that the message is spam, but that doesn’t matter as long as human eyes actually see it. If one person buys their product they probably make enough money to justify the whole mailing.
As far as that passage, I can’t find it in a Google book search (which searches in the text of many books) so you’ll have to wait for someone who’s actually read that book and recognizes it.
