Saturday Is A Slow Pleasant Day
He sat up and stretched his arms over his head. He just had the strangest dream. A gigantic bee was buzzing in his left ear and getting ready to sting him. He didn’t know whether to try to swat it or just hope it would fly away. As he shook his head, the bee kept buzzing. It won’t give up he thought.
Shaking his head, he realized the loud sound was outside his window. Oh yeah he thought to himself, it’s dad playing around with his new mcculloch chainsaw. He got down and went over to the window. He had been with him at the hardware store last Thursday when he bought it on sale. His dad was really excited about using it to trim the trees along the edge of their lot line.
He went down the stairs to the kitchen for some eggs and toast. Mom was starting to cook something in the slow cooker. Wonder if she has any chores for me today. If she does, I’ll finish them before noon. He wanted to go play basketball with some friends from his school.
His mom asked him how early dad went out to use his new homelite chainsaw. He told her he didn’t know and that they had bought the other one since both were good quality. But he bought the one on sale. Now the trees on their property were all getting a trim today. He wondered why they hadn’t talked about what brand he bought.
He talked about his week at school as he ate breakfast. His mom said they had a rough day at work but she was glad she had a job. He griped a little about one homework assignment in English. He was planning to read a book he had to read for school, one written by Shakespeare, this weekend. Maybe he would catch a movie too.
Then he went upstairs, threw his pajamas up on the twin loft bed and got dressed in sweats. It was time to go see what his dad was finishing up outside. He thought to himself that he hoped the grass was still short enough. Anyways, dad likes to ride his lawn mower around the yard and cut it himself.
He walked down to where his dad was working. The trees look good, he told him. This was his father’s idea of fun. He loved to use the mccullogh chainsaw and ride his lawn mower on weekends. This may be his idea of fun but his son hoped he’d have better things to do when he grew up.
