Tips For Novice Cooks Preparing To Buy Their First Pans
Cooking is much simpler when you own the right pan for the job. Frequently, however, novice cooks buy pans in a set that may or may not contain the types and sizes they actually need. If you limit your purchases of sets and choose your pans individually, you will be more likely to have the proper pan for what you need to cook.
Pans for the range top are often packaged in sets, commonly a one quart, two quart, and four quart pan. If the set also includes matching lids, this type of set can be a good place to start. If you plan to cook larger batches of stew, soup, or chili, you might want to consider a 6 or 8 quart pot as well. These are sometimes referred to as stock pots, and they let you cook enough for an extra meal later on.
To fix layer cakes, a minimum of two round cake pans will be required. If, however, you prefer to bake your cakes in a rectangular pan or cook mainly pies or cookies, you need not purchase these at all. Many cooks like the oblong style because they are easier to bake and frost. These pans are quite useful for many other purposes, such as preparing casseroles.
Cookie sheets or baking sheets come in two basic varieties. One type has shallow sides all the way around. The other type is bent up at the ends and the sides are open. Enclosed baking sheets are recommended for cookies that require a greased surface. They can also be used to bake rolls, frozen dinners, or pies.
You might want to consider one pan in a special shape for baking cakes or molding gelatin. Opt for a fairly generic subject that you can use on various occasions. Excellent choices include a starfish design, a cartoon character, or a heart cake pan.
If you fix food to take to work or a neighborhood party, consider using a disposable cake pan for the purpose. These are economical and convenient, and many can be found in decorative designs. This eliminates the worry of getting your good pans returned safely to you. They are also nice to use for baking foods that may stick rather badly, such as candied yams.
Cast iron that has been well seasoned cooks quickly and evenly and will last much longer than the coated finishes. A skillet is a nice addition, since it can be used to bake items in the oven or fry them on top of the range. Never place a cast iron pan in the dishwasher and never leave it soaking for very long. Once it has cooled, clean it and then make sure it is completely dry before storing it.
Pans are available from very economical models to expensive professional grade models. If you think you might like to have one of the restaurant quality sets, you might consider purchasing just one pan first. This gives you a chance to evaluate the product before you invest hundreds or even thousands in a set you may not like.
