How to cover a 1/2 sheet cake with wood look w/o using fondant?
I am trying to do an “Andy’s Room” (from toy story) cake from my son. I have never used fondant before and am comfortable with attempting to use it for the actual bed. However, I would like to use something else for the sheet cake (floor of the room) for 2 reasons…taste and my inexperience. Any help, suggestions, recipes would be greaty appreciated…the more specific the better!! Thanks!!!
You can ice the cake in buttercream, either use chocolate buttercream or color the white buttercream the color you want. I would go with a more tan color, use about 3 parts yellow, 1 part orange and 1 part brown colors.
After the cake is iced, take a meat skewer or something sharp and pointy (a rose nail)….make lines on the cake about 3 inches wide for the boards. inside of each of those sets of lines make wood grain markings.
In a small bowl mix up some brown food coloring, diluted with water (If you are using the gel colors, use 1 part gel to 3 parts water) Take a clean pastry brush or paint brush or a sponge and dip it in the diluted color. Brush it across the top of the cake so it goes down in the lines which you made, wipe off any excess color using a damp paper towel. You will want to leave some of the darker brown color on the tan part also. You should now have a tan background with brown wood markings.
This is the recipe I use for buttercream icing.
Buttercream Icing
1 cup butter or margarine
1 cup Crisco
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
8 cups powdered sugar (one 2 lb. bag)
6 tablespoons milk or 8 tablespoons cream
One batch of this icing will ice and decorate a quarter sheet cake 9×13.
Cream together the butter, Crisco, and vanilla. add salt, powdered sugar and milk or cream. Mix on low until combined (if it is too stiff add a little more liquid). Turn mixer to med speed and mix 1 minute. turn back to low and let it stir for about 15 min.
