If you rip a piece of lino off of your kitchen floor… can you buy a piece with the same pattern and fill in?
My dog ripped a peice of our lino off of our kitchen floor… how there is about a 10 inch long strip of lino off our floor… are we able to go find that pattern… cut out the appropriate size in the floor and put it in?
That type of repair can be done easily providing you have the proper tools. Here are some things you will need.
Replacement piece of lino with matching pattern
Sharp utility knife
Masking tape
Straight edge
Small putty knife
Adhesive
Small notch trowel
Seam sealer (optional)
First you want to cut your replacement piece of vinyl into a workable section. I recommend that it be an inch wider on all sides than what you need.
Place your replacement piece over the section to be repaired and use the masking tape to hold it in place after alignment.
After your piece is taped into place then lay the straight edge onto the replacement piece where you need to make your cut. Use your utility knife along your straight edge applying enough pressure to cut thru both layers of material. Repeat process working around the area until you have made a square. Block patterns are generally easier because you can just follow the block and typically hide the repair better.
Remove the replacement piece after you have cut your square and then remove all the excess material that remains taped to the floor.
After you have removed that material then you need to remove the damaged area. There may be some felt material still attached to the floor after you have removed the damaged spot depending on the type of vinyl (linoleum) you have. Use the small putty knife to scrape away the excess felt so you have a clean surface.
When you have cleaned the area where you will be putting in the replacement apply some adhesive to the floor using a small notch trowel. Then insert your replacement piece. You can use your putty knife to apply some pressure to the area by laying the blade on the vinyl and pulling the knife toward you. Continue to do this over the entire area of the replacement. This will help ensure you have a good bond.
I do suggest you use a vinyl seam sealer for a long lasting repair but isn’t completely necessary for a do it yourselfer. The seam sealer will increase the longevity of the repair though. Instructions on how to apply will be on the can/bottle and will be available at box stores such as Lowes/Home Depot in the flooring dept.
