Don’t read this article on desert recipes expecting to get ideas for sweet after dinner treats. Don’t read it for tips on healthy ends to nutritious meals either. Please don’t be confused. Dessert takes place after dinner, while a. desert is usually in the sand. Read on to learn tips about cooking in the hot desert.
The desert has one element that makes it ideal for cooking food. That element is the sun. Temperatures in the desert can top 150°F, that’s good for cooking. That heat can be used in the place of an oven, microwave or other modern cooking appliances.
There are expensive solar cookers as well as homemade ones. Desert recipes work well in these cookers where temperatures reach 300°F. Hotdogs, steaks, soups, even spaghetti can be cooked here. Don’t forget two things, however. Number one this is a slow cooking technique. It takes all day to cook. As the sun moves you’ll have to realign the cooker. And when the sun isn’t shining, on a cloudy day or at night, a solar cooker is no good.
Solar cooking has some unique advantages too. When food is cooked slowly it retains moisture. Because the cooking is so slow, there’s no need to worry about burning it. Have your doubts? Try leaving some French fries in hot oil for an extra 10 seconds after they’re cooked. Another advantage of solar cooking is that it’s a process. Waiting longer for food to cook, doing more while it cooks, adds to the anticipation. Cooking isn’t just cooking and eating, it’s presentation and experience too. And don’t worry about food not browning in a solar cooker. If there’s some fat, the meat will brown.
