How to Repair Holes in Wood before Painting then Finish by Sanding
It would be easier if a wooden house needed no more than minimal home maintenance. Only scrape and caulk some, lay down some painting drop cloths, and apply a few coats of outdoor acrylic paint.
Well, it just is not so easy. Rather than easy, you may need to patch the wooden facings of your home.
My property had to have a lot more be done. The galvanized metal under my shingles was badly done and enabled the water to penetrate the overhang board. Over time, the wood shriveled and the paint fell away.
I researched how to get it done right. I was sure that standard compounds to fill wood would last.
My next door neighbor worked on the wood of his home often fighting termite infestations. These jobs stood the test of time. I wanted know why his repairs did not crack.

Bondo was great for car dents. This auto filler kept its shape. This auto filler could be planed. When he suggested doing this, I instantly knew that it would do the job.
Using Bondo, the approach is to fill in the large holes in layer after layer with big gobs initially and less material thereafter. Bondo allows you to form shapes with molds, with ordinary kitchen wax paper and wood to shape. When sanding and finishing prior to painting purchase one of the best discount power sanders to make the Bondo blend smoothly with the wood.
Homeowners with a wooden deck, consider the fact that you could also apply Bondo to fill in gouges in the planks of a wood deck design. It is sometimes necessary, when you are refinishing redwood decks.
Consider that Bondo finishes with a reddish hew and that will be what you see, when using a light colored water sealant on your wood deck. If you want to preserve a wooden deck that has Bondo, just cover it with prime and painting.
Note that you do not need to find an auto parts store to get Bondo. You can get Bondo at Lowes or Home Depot. You probably would also like to know that my house wood fixing job has not shrunk at all over the years.
