What’s In The Modern Kitchen

It’s amazing to look at pictures of kitchens of old compared to today’s kitchen. Those old kitchens were small, enclosed spaces that were not really even efficient as rooms in which to prepare food. The modern kitchen, on the other hand, is a marvel of technology and design.

The first big change to come over kitchens was when somebody had the bright idea to knock out the walls surrounding it. Suddenly, there was light streaming in all around and the air was no longer stagnant.

That did create a storage problem, however, but kitchen designers came up with clever solutions for that. They left the sink where it was, on the outside wall in front of the window and used the adjacent wall for the oven and cooktop.

On the other side of the room, the wall was replaced by a peninsular bench. On the kitchen side, this bench was at working height, but it had a raised bar on the other side. This served two purposes. First, it was a great place for people to sit on bar stools and enjoy breakfast or a snack. Secondly, small appliances like the Sanyo rice cooker could be stashed neatly away, but available for immediate use.

The kitchen cabinets and cupboards underwent radical changes as well. Designers started adding more drawers and less doors. With banks of deep drawers, it became possible to store everything from small appliances such as the kitchen hand mixer to big pots and pans in a drawer, making everything within easy reach.

The corner cupboard has always been a problem in the kitchen. Things always get lost in the back of the cupboard. It’s so deep, even a homelite chainsaw could disappear back there. Kitchen designers and hardware designers put their heads together and came up with the lazy susan. With a lazy susan, all you need to do is spin her around and whatever you want is at your fingertips. There’s no need to get down on your hands and knees and rummage around anymore.

The materials that are used to make the kitchen are much better now, too. Melamine shelves and cabinets are so easy to keep clean and are long wearing, too. Melamine door and drawer fronts are inexpensive, come in a wide range of designer colors and so easy to maintain.

Sinks, refrigerators, ovens, cooktops, microwaves – you name it and it has just gotten better, more durable and more efficient over the years. When you stop and think about it, all these improvements in the kitchen have probably added more to the family home than any other change over the years. It’s no wonder the kitchen is the most popular room in the house!
