Should I replace the filter media in a 2nd hand canister filter?

Or is it possible to clean the media that it comes with – I have heard that if a filter is out of action for a while that any organisms that may be contained within can go toxic

You wouldn’t put an second hand toothbrush into your mouth?? Same goes for filters, your best bet is to change the filters and wash the canister throughly, as you may transfer disnease and decayed bacteria which will turn your water into a toxic mess. Any filter media from another tank or left standing/ dried out should be replaced.
