There have been many studies on many killer diseases of the 20th century and the statistical data point to diet as the major contributor, if not the source. One of these studies is documented in Forks Over Knives which is set to be shown in movies this 6th of May, 2011.
Professor T. Colin Campbell, PhD. Of Cornell University did a study called The China Study, considered the most comprehensive study in the role of diet, disease, and health that concludes that “a purely vegan diet is optimal for human health”. Dr. Campbell has many other studies which included other Asian Countries like the Philippines. I come from that country and old enough to agree with his findings that many in my country, especially those living in the cities and have adopted the western diet, mainly through the big supermarkets and fastfood restaurants like MacDonalds and the like, have been afflicted with the diseases of the west, such as, and mostly, cancer.
What I worry about, though, is that these people have always consumed as much meat before the arrival of processed meat products mainly from the US and China, lately. To point to excess meat protein consumption as the cause of the emergence of the diseases of the “west” in a third country such as ours, is like saying that our per capita consumption of meat has zoomed up after we were introduced to canned meats, which is totally ridiculous. Let’s just say that the people turned to processed meat but consumed the same amount as before (because that’s how much they can always afford, anyway) because of the convenience in preparing their meals.
