How To Give Great Gifts
We got everything we expected in our wedding gifts. Literally. It was no great surprise, of course, it was all stuff we had registered for. I’m not trying to say that registering for gifts is a bad idea. On the contrary, it’s prevented many ugly gifts or embarrassing multiples. (For example, I went to a friend’s wedding shower where she got an anodized cookware set. She was really happy about it, until she unwrapped two more of the same kind! It was very embarrassing for everyone there.)
This is what is great about registries. You are able to be sure that the gift you’re giving is something they want, and that someone else has not already gotten it for them. Unfortunately, what has happened is that all the thought has gone out of it. It’s so easy to go to the store, pick something from the list, pay for it, and be done. But it really is the thought that counts.
The fact that gift-giving had become an empty act didn’t hit me until my new husband and I were putting away all the wedding gifts we had gotten. Bowls, pretty silver frames, cookware and bedding, they were all very nice. But my husband was obsessed with one gift. His cousin had gotten him an Alvarez acoustic guitar.
His cousin took the time and energy to get my husband something he really wanted. Something that was not on our registry. His cousin hates shopping, so the fact that he remembered something important to my husband as well as took that extra step to get it meant a lot. It was a kindness we both would remember always.
It was at that point I realized that I was really wanting to get my hands on a particular gift. My sister had gotten me a box full of scrapbooking materials. Gorgeous scrapbooking papers, stickers, paper punches, ribbon, rubber stamps and so many more things. I could hardly wait to open it up and start making pages with our wedding photos.
Scrapbooking stuff certainly was not on our wedding gift registry. She just knew I would love it. My point is that it is the gifts that people give us because they know and value us that mean the most. I’ve decided not to register for my baby shower. If getting thoughtful gifts means risking a few extra diaper pails, I’m willing to take that risk.
So when you find yourself shopping for gifts next time, try giving some thought to the person and what they might enjoy. If you do not know them that well or you are not good at giving gifts in general, then definitely go with the registry. But if you have any sort of relationship with the person, try not to take the easy route. A little extra thought and time can mean the difference between an okay gift and one that’s truly memorable.
