The Oxford Dictionary and a focus on learning to speak english, how to speak french & how to speak german
The Oxford dictionary is the final authority on the English language It has a stellar reputation and people all over the world are using it when they are concerned with learn how to speak english.
The Oxford dictionary first appeared over 100 years ago. It began in London in 1857. A society of linguists believed a more complete dictionary was needed. They began from step one to look at the language. The project was much larger than they first thought.
The development of the Oxford dictionary had taken a big step in 1879 when the society made an agreement with the Oxford University press to begin work on a new dictionary of the English language. The New English Dictionary was the name they selected. It was planned to be four volumes, 6400 pages. The plan was to cover the language from 1150 AD to present. They thought it would take 10 years to complete. It is a great matter that this lexicon endures as we see contemporary issues depending on whether or not a person is engaged with how to speak spanish.
By the five year mark this precursor to the Oxford dictionary had words up to ant. It was time to adjust the schedule. One problem was the constant evolution of English. While working on new words they were constantly changing the descriptions of the old ones. All this had to be done when they continued to look at words from the previous seven centuries. The English speech is so important and as referred to before many pursue the model set by this lexicon and the circumstance is relevant when related to how to speak german.
The Oxford dictionary continued to develop over the next four decades. Additional editors joined the team. It had expanded to ten volumes. It covered 400,000 words. When finished it was the final source for information about English. 40 years later the initial mission was accomplished.
As soon as this first version of the Oxford dictionary was finished work began on a new version. In 1933 a supplement was published in the dictionary had expanded to 12 volumes. This remained until 1957. A new supplement was finally finished and published from 1972 through 1986 in four volumes.
The Oxford dictionary entered a new age in 1982. The editors began transferring it from paper to electronic format. They spent over 13 million dollars to make this happen. It was a 5 year task. The result of this electronic transfer was a second edition published in 1989. It’s 22,000 pages over 20 volumes.
From an idea to online, the Oxford dictionary has made a spectacular journey.
