Do Your Glasses Match The F1 Grid?
The two things go well together, like ham and tomato, brick and mortar or tuna fish paste and bananas. Alright, maybe not the last one, but there is a huge link between sunglasses and formula one and not just through drivers, but the fans too and the makers who pour millions to feature on the 200mph billboards.
So, what happens if designer sunglasses were actually f1 teams, which sunglasses would be the McLaren team and who would be Ferrari? Firstly you need to work out what to base it on, which makes it a lot harder than initial thinking may have lead you to believe. Do you simply look at logos and decide whose are alike or do you look at company philosophy and prestige? Combining a mixture of this doesn’t come up with a definitive list (you’ll surely have your own list, so feel free to comment!) but it does come up with something to argue with your mates.
First up we have Oakley sunglasses, surely Ferrari when it comes to the world of glasses and it doesnt even matter that they arent italian they just seem to go hand in hand. Police sunglasses are much harder to attach to a team, but considering their style, recent improvement in popularity and sometimes bad boy image, surely no other team than Red Bull could be compared.
The two Britons at McLaren are probably the biggest advocates of glasses There is an obvious choise and that Ray Ban, but they are still linked in many peoples minds to the old Brawn team where Jenson won the title last year, so it would be fair to associate them with the new owners Mercedes and instead appoint Hugo Boss as the obvious choice for McLaren, after all they have sponsored them in the past and a look at the two companies marketing directions show some real similarities. The obvious choice would be Ray Ban, inexorably linked with Jenson Button through his previous employers of course, but we’ll leave Ray Ban for the Mercedes team and instead McLaren get Hugo Boss, a company that has sponsored the team in the past and whose values seem closely aligned with that of the Woking outfit.
We’ve not chosen the entire grid, so feel free to chip in with your own suggestions as to who would be Williams, Lotus and the rest but we’ll leave you with one final thought, perhaps poor old Hispania Racing would be Woolworths 49p kids sunglasses in this piece, unless you know something we don’t.
