When you visit Italy, don’t sit there ignorant about the kinds of espresso drinks and the espresso “lingo”. Do you know how to order an espresso drink like an Italian? I don’t! Let’s find out!
Espresso Beverages
Basic Espresso: This is the traditional espresso, served in a demitasse (French for small cup). Italians tend to gulp the entire thing in one shot to experience the full robustness of the espresso. Italian tend to say that sugar can sit for 30 seconds on top of the espresso’s crema if it is made well.
Espresso Ristretto: This is made with less water in order to accomplish a stronger brew. Also, a finer grind is used with a specific extraction time.
Dopio: This means double-shot in Italian.
Espresso Con Panna: Made with a single shot of espresso with a lump of whipped cream on the surface.
Macchiato: A single shot espresso with frothed milk on the surface.
Espresso Cubano: Double short shots brewed with raw sugar.
Cappuccino Drinks
Basic Cappuccino: A 6 oz. cappuccino is usually made with 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, 1/3 frothed milk. When done properly, the espresso layer should settle between the layer of steamed milk in the bottom and the frothed milk on top.
Classic Cappuccino: It is common to see a cappuccino made with only espresso under the froth in Italy and in North America.
Espresso-Based Specialty Drinks
Maccachino: A single shot of espresso blended with chocolate syrup and topped with 5 oz. steamed milk and frothed milk.
Cafe Mocha: This is poured in a tall glass with a single shot of espresso mixed with chocolate syrup. The glass is then filled with steamed milk and covered on top with whipped cream and chocolate flakes for garnish.
Nienta: Decaffeinated cappuccino with nonfat milk.
