How Experts Classify Hardwood Plywood
The temperate climate of America makes it great for cultivating hardwoods. These wood species are a group of trees, which are normally dormant during winter and grow broad leaves on spring season. The country has hundreds of hardwood species that grow in the forests while others are artificially cultivated on controlled reserves. These tree species compose almost 40 percent of the forest trees and federal laws control logging. One of the most useful forms of these tree species is hardwood plywood.
Hardwoods are preferred for construction purposes whether for structural reinforcement or for home furnishings. Its dense and sturdy quality provides a durable and aesthetic material perfect for decorative purposes. Some of the most common hardwood species include maple, oak, birch, and beech. These are turned into different products such as furniture pieces, home furnishings, and floorings. The intricate pattern of each kind of wood makes the final products look beautiful and aesthetic. To control the quality of hardwoods released in the market, the National Hardwood Lumber Association of United States have released a grading standard that covers all the hardwood products.
Understanding the whole grading standard would be very difficult. It contains specifications for each type of wood and there are almost hundreds of unique species. Here are some of the basic principles behind the classification set by this association. This classification depends on the physical appearance of the wood when cut into hardwood plywood or lumber. It is said that there are no two boards alike and each wood slice results in a unique marking that reveals a distinct pattern. Each board is graded depending on clarity of the surface and the presence of defects. For a hardwood to grade higher, it needs to have clearer face cutting and lesser defects. It is also important that the defects do not affect the overall strength of the plywood. The top three grades of hardwoods include FAS, Selects and No. 1 Common. FAS (Firsts and Seconds) is the best class that can produce larger board cuttings or broader plywood surfaces. Selects, on the other hand, are graded depending on the best side of the cutting. These boards are cheaper as compared with FAS while No. 1 Common has relatively narrower dimensions.
After these boards are classified, they are then processed into your desired form, which can be in lumber, timber, or plywood. Their price ultimately depends on the quality of the board used. Some manufacturers reveal the grade of a hardwood product to the buyer while others are available upon request. Each form has its own usage. Lumbers are great for home structures and construction purposes. Plywood, on the other hand, has multiple uses, which include wood flooring, cabinetry, wall panels, furniture, formwork, and bracing. A separate grading system, in the form of letters, is used for plywood materials. Grade A stands for the highest quality (no blemishes and well sanded) while Grade D stands for the poor plywood. The grades are stamped on the plywood surface so that you can easily check them. Some products may have paired grades such A-B or C-D. This means that the faces are uneven; one side might be well finished while the other is rough. Aside from its use in classifying the price of hardwood plywood, this grading system is also used by expert homebuilders in choosing the best material for specific parts of the house.
These are the common ways of classifying different hardwood products. Other ways of differentiating plywood include the bonding technique used to combine its layers, its dimension and size, and its purposes. All of these classifications need to be considered every time you purchase hardwood products.
