How much can I prune a grape vine in a year?
I have a concord grape vine that wasn’t pruned for the whole 5 years that I was away at college. It is completely overgrown and the fruit is suffering for it because the roots just cannot support how massive it has gotten. I’d like to prune it pretty dramatically this fall when it goes dormant, but I have no idea how much is too much.
You can prune a lot. In fact, it is encouraged at several points in the year.
First, in dormancy: Nodes are what you are looking for. That is where the new growth will come from. How to identify a node? I cheated my first year by waiting until early spring when the nodes began to swell and little green bits started showing up out of them. Then I pruned so that 2 or 3 nodes were still on the plant. The rest gets cut away.
If you have been researching this, you may have seen reference to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year pruing. Yours is 5 years old, so you may get confused by all that. I “forgot” to prune my Concord for 4 years, and just pruned away anyhow. Everything is fine. If you are growing wine or table grapes for production, you would care a lot more about all that.
For right now, you can prune away about 1/3 or more of the baby bunches of grapes. The plant can then concentrate its efforts and you may get some good fruit. Also don’t be afraid to trim some of the green growth now to get it cleaned up and less wild.
