Brighten Your Living Area With Libbey Glass
Two hundred years ago, breaking a goblet meant that a replacement had to be found. They were all handmade at that time, and the search could be expensive and time-consuming. The situation is obviously different today, because mass-produced stemware or tumbler sets are available in a variety of stores, and are comparatively low-cost. Libbey glass helped pioneer this kind of container manufacturing, and is still a major producer.
The history of this company is an American story paralleling the industrial revolution. Its origins go back to a time when it was known as the New England Glass Company, which produced other household items, such as water pitchers, in addition to liquid container products. A New England employee held an important patent on the use of red lead in production, and thus had sole rights to its use, much to the chagrin of the competition.
Any kind of lead, of course, is toxic. Using it in the manufacturing process inevitably gave workers more exposure than necessary, and would not be permitted under today’s employee safety and health laws. In those days, however, New England management liked the look this process gave its product, and hesitated to switch to a different process. Other makers, trying to find an acceptable process that did not use lead, came up the lime-soda formula. It was actually invented by a former worker, and radically changed the way silicon-based products were routinely made.
The basic concept is still in use today to make a variety of containers, including jars, bottles, and tableware, and is even used in the production of windows. The New England management staunchly refused to adopt it, and only hard financial times and declining business revenue forced a change. The company was ready to cease production altogether until members of the Libbey family saved it from oblivion, and renamed it for themselves.
Even with all the technological advances that had already taken place, these products were still manufactured in a painstaking fashion well into the twentieth century. That changed, however, during the 1940s. World War II brought changes to nearly every form of manufacturing, including the production of consumer tableware. The end of that conflict also meant an end to resource shortages, and mass production of many consumer items exploded.
The public liked what they saw, and sales increased dramatically, involving more than just water glasses. Wine goblets, pitchers, even fancy cocktail sets became popular gifts, and the good economic fortunes allowed Libbey to expand production. Now the emphasis was not just on the hotel and restaurant trade, but there was money to be made making products for the dining room.
Today this company not only has an established presence in several states in the U. S. And other western hemisphere nations, but has gained an international scope with the acquisition of manufacturing capability in China. In addition to home products, this family of companies concentrates on containers for the pantry, for baking, serving beverages, and a host of other kitchen and dining decor items.
No longer does this forward-looking company hesitate to incorporate technology into its business plan. Others have taken note of the “lean manufacturing” policies implemented to streamline efficiency and reduce or stop waste altogether such as with products like water pitchers. The company that once commonly used lead now embraces many “green” philosophies and practices. In 2007, Libby glass spearheaded a recycling program, and today helps convert used cast iron, steel, paper products, computers and even basic water and oil into forms that can be reused.
