Put Your Microwave To Work For Dinner
If spending an hour or two in a hot kitchen is not your idea of how to end a day, you might want to consider preparing dinner in your microwave. People sometimes forget that their microwaves are useful for far more than just warming up leftovers. They can be used to prepare meals in much less time than an oven and do not add heat to the kitchen. Since you can often use the same bowls for serving that you use for cooking, microwaves can also save clean up time.
Your countertop microwave should be clean before you begin the meal. Leftovers or foods placed inside uncovered may splatter, and the sides and roof may be peppered with tiny food bits. When you cook the next item, steam may loosen them and they can fall onto what you are trying to cook. Take a minute to clear them away and to make sure the carousel is also clean. This will reduce cooked on food that is difficult to remove.
Most meats can be prepared in any type of microwave. Often, you will be able to cook and then serve in one dish, eliminating the chore of cleaning a pan. One idea you might like to try is to put your meat loaf mix in a microwave safe bundt cake pan. This reduces the cooking time as opposed to a loaf pan, and also dresses up your food. Cooking time will vary, depending on the thickness of the mix and the power of the microwave. However, it will be substantially less than in the oven.
Cook canned or frozen vegetables in the same bowl you will use for serving. Several manufacturers make a very hard bowl out of plastic that is designed specifically for microwave use. Most also have lids, so after dinner you just cover leftovers and place in the refrigerator. All you have to do is pour the contents of the can into the bowl, add any desired seasonings, cover, and heat.
You can bake potatoes quickly and easily with a microwave. Wash them thoroughly and poke numerous holes in them, using either a fork or a knife. Place on a microwavable cake pan or a plate and cook on high until they are soft. The time needed is dependent on how many potatoes you cook at once, the wattage of the microwave, and how large the potatoes might be. As a general rule, it will take at least 15 to 20 minutes.
You can save a dirty pan by making instant mashed potatoes in your microwave. Use a microwave safe bowl, preferably one that has a handle. Following the directions provided on the package, add water, milk, margarine, and any desired salt and pepper. Place in the microwave until the margarine is melted and the liquid is hot. Carefully transfer the bowl to a trivet and add the potatoes. Blend well by hand or use your hand mixer. Let the bowl cool down a bit, if necessary, and then place on the table.
Many foods can burst or splatter in the microwave, so cover anything you think might do so. Exercise extreme caution when removing items, using an oven mitt or pot holder. Keep your face and hands well clear of anything that has just been taken from a microwave. Some ingredients may continue to pop or splatter for a few seconds after the cooking stops.
