What count of digital megapixels are approximately equal to a 100 ASA film?
I wanna buy a digital camera,as good as my 24x36mm film camera,so I need to know.
If you are looking at a fine color transparency film, such as professional grade Fuji Velvia or Kodak Ektachrome films, the final image is made up of dye clouds that measure in the range of 10-15 microns across. Some are smaller and some are larger, but that’s the general range. Let’s look at the smaller (finer “grain”) size of 10 microns. There could be no more than 100 dye clouds per millimeter in any single layer of the emulsion. In a 36x24mm frame, then the dye cloud count could be as fine as 3600×2400 or 8,640,000. This means that an 8.64MP sensor can equal the measurable resolution of good quality ISO 100 films.
Another way to look at this is film noise. Testers use RMS granularity to measure the “noisiness” in films. It is not measuring grain size, but it measures variation in an area of uniform density. In other words, it measures what the eye and testing instruments perceive as “grain,” which does not really exist in transparency films. The article I read expresses the RMS granularity in familiar terms – ppi. Some films that you may be familiar with are:
Kodak Ektachrome 100 – 2290 ppi
Kodak Ektachrome 100GX – 3050 ppi
Fujifilm Velvia 100 – 3300 ppi
Fujifilm Velvia 50 – 4064 ppi
For ISO 100, let’s pick Kodak Ektachrome 100GX as the middle ground. At 3050 ppi, that would be about 4320 x 2880 “points” on a 36 x 24 mm field. That translates into 12,441,600 “points” or about 12.5 MP.
Obviously, there are other factors to image quality than “resolution” of the sensor. Pixel quality can be affected by pixel size, filtration of the photons hitting the sensor and electronic noise, among other things.
If you had a nice sensor (APS-C or full format – not a point and shoot) at least 12 MP or so, you would easily be within the realm of film image quality.
