Get Rid Of The Junk And Improve The Home
Want to improve a home? Get rid of superfluous junk that continues to build up like some sort of mold that just can’t be gotten rid of. It’s a fact that we have more and more ‘stuff’ laying around that is hardly ever put to any good use after the first few times we’ve tried it out. For instance, maybe there’s an old wet dry vacuum that was replaced by a new one, yet the old one just won’t go away.
It just might be that the vacuum could come in handy someday as an emergency backup for the new one we bought long ago or perhaps we’re thinking like NASA does when it comes to the space shuttle and extra computers and such. Redundancy can be important, especially when the basement floods and the big new vacuum we have just can’t handle the load by itself, though we know the real truth of things.
Along that same line, go out and take a look at the stuff that gets shuttled away to the garage over time. And even though we now have gardeners that come out and handle the very nice looking plot of earth we’ve got growing in the yard, we probably can’t bear the thought of parting with those garden blowers we saved up for and then happily bought over at the local home improvement store.
One day, they just may be needed when the gardeners go on strike for higher pay, perhaps. Or maybe it’s because we (men, especially) just can’t bear to part with the accumulation of stuff we gather throughout our lives. Maybe we’re even willing to sacrifice a bit of cleanliness or non-cluttered space in order to keep around items that were never going to use, at least in this lifetime.
Consider the fact that we no longer own a motorcycle after getting married and settling down with the wife and the two recently-arrived children. That bike is long gone and the money we got for it was used to buy the nursery that both children are still happily occupying. However, the full face helmet that went along with the motorcycle we kept, sitting up on our mantle and now gathering dust.
One would have to ask, of course, why we would want to keep the helmet when we do not have a motorcycle to go along with it. Maybe it’s our subtle way of convincing ourselves that we haven’t totally gone domestic and that there’s a possibility — however slight — that a honking new chrome-wheeled, fuel injected beast will soon be back in our driveway, rumbling and waiting to be ridden hard.
Hey, it could happen though the chances are still exceedingly slim. We love junk, which in our eyes is not junk but something valuable and that has a connection to our past. Improving the home by getting rid of the junk is at once exceedingly easy and extremely difficult, though. Keeping stuff like helmets, vacuums and blowers MIGHT be a connection to our past but it DEFINITELY is connecting us to junk.
