Bad For Your Health: Laser Printers?
Sometimes it seems like health risks are being created by every piece of new technology we invent. One such thing is laser printers, which have recently been closely examined in order to determine if they carry any health risks. Staying near a working laser printer has been compared directly to standing near a smoker while they smoke. At least, you can see and smell the smoke from the cigarette and move away from it. Emissions from laser toner are generally invisible and odorless, unless they are thoroughly concentrated into one small area. Even then, they are hard to detect.
As always, there are different opinions on either sides of the issue. HP has even been doing its own testing ever since they were accused of being the worst of the polluting printer companies. According to them, the particles found in ventilation paths are toner-like, but they cannot determine the chemical composition of them. They can also determine where in the printing system the particles came from. It should be pointed out that more than just the toner and the rollers could be emitting them.
HP is probably highlighted because they have so many printers in the marketplace. Out of a random selection of 42 printers, all from one building, 34 of them were HP brand. What’s scary is that 13 of those were labeled “high emission”, and they can vary within the same printer model. HP says that their laser toner has been manufactured to be well within safe indoor occupational exposure limits. The debate rages on, and who knows what the conclusion will be.
Now, whether or not you consider laser printers to be dangerous due to breathing pollutants, those pollutants might also be flammable. Most people don’t know how the particles of laser toner in a printer are printed onto a piece of paper. As a result, they probably don’t know that each particle is electrostatically charged. If a large enough quantity of toner particles is sucked up by a conventional vacuum cleaner, there is a great chance of the particles igniting the dust in the machine, causing a fire or slight explosion.
A few vacuum cleaners are designed to trap electrostatically charged particles, which can get around this danger. HEPA filters are also installed in them. The average vacuum has a filter, of course, but it’s probably not fine enough to filter out the very fine toner particles. Because of that, the toner tends to be thrown back into the air, or it may even get mixed up in the motor and clog it over a long period of time.
Of course, each side has its own tidbits of truth. There are pollutants in every indoor environment, and some of them are believed to be dangerous. Whether these particles come only from laser toner, or if it’s generated by several different machines at the same time, is very hard to determine. What is known is that replacing filters regularly and putting the printer somewhere with good ventilation will result in the least health risks until a better solution is created.
