History Of The St Louis Blues
The St Louis Blues first became members of the NHL or National Hockey League in 1967 when they joined. This team has held some of the most impressive players throughout history on the roster. The teams of long ago and the teams of more recent years have all had impressive players that were known as some of the best in the league.
Doug Harvey, Dickie Moore, Jacques Plante, and Glen Hall are some of the first pro stars for the game of hockey and each one of them played and integral part of their time on the Blues. In addition Peter Stastny, Brett Hull, Dale Hawerchuk and Wayne Gretzky have been some of the hockey all stars of recent years. The team has not just been fortunate enough to have amazing players but also been blessed with some great owners and staff over the years.
Lynn Patrick and Emile Francis, the famous architects, even co-owned the Blues at one time as did a handful of other famous individuals. Cliff Fletcher and Jimmy Devellano spent time as team builders. Coaching staff has included Jacques Demers, Scotty Bowman, and Al Arbour who were all known as industry leaders at one time or another.
The team has had many successes although has yet to win a Stanley Cup. However with those successes have come a whole list of tragedies from the tragic deaths of players, to that of sports casters and even staff. So the team has had to learn how to persevere through the tough times in order to be able to celebrate during the good.
One noticeable change in the history is that the mood seems to change frequently with the owners of the time. Some of these individuals chose to rule with an iron fist and these were years where there was not as much enjoyment. Others seemed to rule by spoiling and showing off what they were proud of which equates to years of happiness and fun.
In most conditions the owners have worked well together when there was more than one owner. However from 1971 until 1977 there was a time of turmoil and unrest amongst the owners until one eventually left, leaving only one. It was also at this time that there was financial issues that threatened the very existence of the team from 1976 until 1983 at which time the doors actually closed to the stadium and it seemed that there would be no more.
Just when it felt like this would be the end to the Blues they were purchased by another owner and although they missed the draft that season they were still able to play. This brought about many changes including that they were finally looked at the leader that they had always been. Additionally the fans have a unique pride and spirit that they associate with their beloved team.
It is true that this is unique in that most sports fans do not have these same feelings that a St Louis Blues fan does. This could be for a number of reasons but is most likely due to the fact that they seen the good, the bad, the ups, and the downs and always came out on top. Thankfully this has secured them a future in the sport.
